Having been to a fair number of nanotech/distech/emtech conferences over the years, the one thread that occurs with increasing frequency is how many researchers are going back to nature to answer questions about form, function, durability and efficacy.

There’s a profound scientific transition afoot. In past decades, scientific discovery was more of a statement on how man could impose his will on the surrounding world. It was about forcing the laws of nature to submit to man’s cunning. And this worked for a while--until scientists and regular folk were forced to realize we live in a closed system in which we force our way to new methods, tools and products. We’re using that brute force against ourselves. And it begins to cause all sorts of new challenges.

The new science, which has been largely enabled by nanotechnology--the manipulation and construction of materials at atomic and molecular levels-- is allowing scientists to explore how nature solves certain challenges and then adapt those natural systems for use in manmade materials, whether it be architecture, textiles, medicines or locomotion.

This new school of study is called biomemetics or biomimicry. What being a doctor or a lawyer was to past generations and being a computer geek is to current generations, biomemetic scientists will be the big career of the future.

Election Results, Recession Fears and What Investors Should Do Next

What's really happening in the markets?  What trends are in store for the next 3 months?  How will a new presidential administration affect investors?  What are the best low risk/high reward opportunities TODAY?

Find out all the answers to these questions and more.

The funny thing is, the more amazing things we can do with science, the more we discover how amazing the natural world already is—and has been for millions of years. There’s an ancient Chinese saying: “going on means going far, going far means returning.” Or as the French say, “Plus c’est le change, plus c’est le meme chose” (the more things change, the more they stay the same).

Anyway, below are a few links to some incredible projects and efforts underway and completed that give a good scope of what’s possible in this nascent field.

Here’s a great National Geographic article on the general subject with some great pics.

Here’s a building built in Harare, Zimbabwe using the construction principles of a termite mound. The building saved $3.5 million because it doesn’t need air conditioners and the rents are 20 percent lower for the merchants because the building is less expensive to maintain.

Stanford University is working on biologically-inspired robots.

Here’s a good list of all the potential projects in which biomemetics is already involved.
